iFindProperty is stepping into the Christchurch market to offer up property investment deals at an exciting time in the region's recovery. Progress is tracking towards a modern, safe, reimagined central city supported by an urban rebuild and an expanding regional economy.
Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island and New Zealand's third most populous urban area with a population of over 340,000 as of the 2013 census.
Our investors have been asking us about Christchurch for some time now and with accomplished Christchurch investor and former NZ Basketball Olympian Sally Farmer recently joining our we're very excited to finally be heading to the South Island.
In 2010 & 2011 the city was rocked by a series of earthquakes that resulted in the tragic loss of life and widespread damage. 80% of the buildings in the central city and a large number of homes have had (or will need) to be demolished and rebuilt.
The New Zealand Government and the Christchurch City Council embarked on an ambitious rebuild programme that is still ongoing. To get some high level perspective of the amount of investment that has gone into Christchurch this is how Peter Townsend, Chief Executive of the Canterbury Employer’s Chamber of Commerce, sees it:
‘It is a bit like tipping three years of Fonterra's total export earnings into a population of less than 500,000. That has never happened before in New Zealand. It is probably understating it to call it the biggest economic development programme the country has ever seen.’
The sudden influx of investment, combined with a critical housing shortage created a perfect storm that saw property in Christchurch appreciate rapidly; a trend that is only now starting to level out. There is still a long way to go for the city and there are a lot of opportunities to invest in the Christchurch market, which is why we're so excited to have Sally join us.
As we like to do when introducing new regions, we put together this introduction to Christchurch. We hope this resource is useful. At the bottom of the email is Sally's first property listing and with the amount of work she is putting in there will be a lot more very soon so please contact Sally to get onto our hotlist for early notification of Christchurch deals going forward.
The agricultural industry has always been the economic core of Christchurch. The city has long had industry based on the surrounding farming country - PGG Wrightson, New Zealand's leading agribusiness, is based in Christchurch.
