Roll on 2050 - New Zealand economy to rise

In the world of 2050, New Zealand will have economic bragging rights over the rest of the developed world.

Though many readers will not be around to see it, or will be watching developments from their retirement sofa, the country is going to be the only one in the club of mainly white, western developed nations in growth mode, a study by global bank HSBC predicts.

HSBC's modelling – which factors in population growth, the strength of the rule of law, current wages and education – predicts that New Zealand will be rising up the per capita income rankings (26th compared to 28th today) and the six million Kiwis living here will see their economy growing at between 3 per cent and 5 per cent a year, a growth-banding shared by the likes of Iran, Russia, Nigeria (which will then have a population equal to the US) and Brazil.
